Nebraska Basketball: Huskers outlast Wildcats

Nebraska 54 Northwestern 47

Player of the Game:
Shavon Shields- It's tough to give this one to anyone in such an offensively challenged game, but when the Huskers needed him the most, Shields stepped up. He hit a key jumper to put Nebraska up seven points with under two minutes to play. He also made a free throw from the foul line to help ensure the win. He finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his second double double in three games. His leadership will be key down the stretch if the Huskers want to make a run at the NCAA Tournament.

Key Stat:
Field goal shooting- Both teams struggled to score the entire night, but Nebraska did just enough to win. The Wildcats finished the game shooting just 33 percent while the Huskers weren't much better at 37 percent. It's like Nebraska coach Tim Miles has been saying all season long; play fantastic defense with good enough offense. That formula has kept Nebraska in a lot of games this season. Saturday was no exception.

Play of the Game:
Northwestern trailed by four points with less than a minute to go and had all the momentum. But Benny Parker jumped in front of a Wildcat player and drew a charge, leading to a standing ovation from the Pinnacle Bank Arena crowd. Parker lingered on the floor a little longer while Terran Petteway and Walter Pitchford yelled with him. It was a huge play and proved to be the momentum Nebraska needed to pull off the win.

Other Notes:
-Nebraska improves to 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten with the win.
-Nebraska now has seven conference home wins, the most since the 1965-66 team went 7-0 in Big Eight action.  It is only the fourth time in school history that Nebraska has won seven or more conference home games in a season (also 1923-24 and 1915-16).
-Nebraska is now 9-7 in the Big Ten, marking the first time since the 1999-2000 that Nebraska has won at least nine conference games in a season. Nebraska will finish .500 or better in conference play for the first time since 2008-09
-Nebraska’s crowd of 15,978 is the largest crowd in school history, breaking the 15,949 against Arkansas State on Dec. 14.
-Shavon Shields had his second double-double of the season and third of his career with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
-Nebraska held Northwestern to 33.3 percent shooting, the seventh straight opponent under 40 percent. It is the first time NU has seven straight conference foes under 40 percent since at least the 1990-91 season.
-Nebraska sweeps the regular-season series with Northwestern for the first time since joining the Big Ten.
