Happy Friday! It’s been a great week of sports with the
Super Bowl on Sunday, some fantastic college basketball and the Winter Olympics
starting.
So lets get to the weekend predictions.
The Marqee Matchup
No. 10 Michigan @ No. 17 Iowa, Saturday, 1 p.m. (CST), ESPN:
This one has drama written all over it. The Wolverines are
coming off a dismantling of Nebraska earlier this week at home. The Hawkeyes
looked lethargic in their home loss to Ohio State. Both teams seem to be going
in opposite directions, but I like more desperate team in this one, and that’s
Iowa. Michigan only has one loss in conference play and has been playing
offense at an incredible rate—third in the nation in offensive efficiency. The
Hawkeyes have a potent offense as well, but struggled against Ohio State’s
pressure. It all adds up to be a great basketball game. Expect a lot of fireworks in this one. Iowa 85 Michigan 80.
Second Tier
No. 4 Wichita State @ Northern Iowa, Saturday, 8 p.m., ESPN
2:
The undefeated Shockers gutted out a win on national television earlier
this week against Indiana State. Can they make it two in a row Saturday?
Northern Iowa has a knack for playing well against big time opponents. You all
remember what it did against Kansas a few years ago. But you probably don’t
remember that the Panthers knocked off both Wichita State and Creighton—who’s
doing pretty well this season as well—at home last season. The Shockers are
going to get every team’s best shot and Cedar Falls, Iowa will be rocking Saturday night. Don’t be surprised if they come out of
this one with their first loss of the season. I just don't think it will happen. Wichita State 58 UNI 56.
Might Get Interesting
No. 12 Creighton @ St. Johns, Sunday, 6 p.m., Fox Sports 1:
The last time these teams played was one of the best games
in college basketball this season. Doug McDermott scored 39 points, including a game-winner. That was in Omaha, Neb., as well. This could be a dog fight for
the Blue Jays, especially if they don’t shoot well. McDermott carried them the
last time, but I’m guessing St. Johns will try to key on him even more than
usual. I still like Creighton, but don’t be surprised if there’s an upset. Creighton
65 St. Johns 61.
