Nebraska Basketball: Wolverines route the Huskers

No. 16 Michigan 79 Nebraska 50

Player of the Game:
Nik Stauskas- He only had nine points, but he never forced the issue on offense. Heck, he only shot the ball three times from the field. That’s pretty unselfish for the Big Ten’s leading scorer. Oh, he also had eight assists. This game just shows the kind of player he can be. He doesn’t need to make a bunch of shots for Michigan to win. He just needs to do what his team needs him to do. That’s what an MVP does and that’s what Stauskas did Wednesday night.

Key Stat:
3-point shooting- It was the theme throughout the night. Michigan knocked down nine in the first half, en route to a school record 13 for the game. Zak Irvin hit four of them, while Glenn Robinson III finished with three of his own. On the other side, Nebraska couldn’t buy an outside jumper until the game was out of reach. Nathan Hawkins knocked down three of his own, helping him score a career high 11 points for Nebraska. The Huskers only shot 23 percent from behind the arc. When a team can’t make threes and can’t defend threes, it’s difficult to win.

Play of the Game:
Nebraska cut the lead to 16-12 early in the first half. That’s when the Wolverines started their onslaught. Three-point basket after three-point basket occurred in the next eight minutes of the game. When the dust finally cleared, Michigan had a 43-15 lead thanks to a 27-3 run that blew the game wide open.

Other Notes:
-Terran Petteway was held to five points, snapping a streak of 17 games in double figures dating back to Nov. 21
-Nebraska’s 49 points were a season low (previous low was 53 at No. 2 Ohio State)
-Nebraska falls to 1-3 against ranked teams this season.
-Michigan’s 13 3-pointers were a season-high against Nebraska (previous high was 11 by Creighton).
